i am a channel

1st version: June 1999, poduction: De Beweeging
last version: june 2001

i am a channel consists of 2 wooden walls (lenghth 6m) forming a corridor in which a screen made of cristal tubes is suspended. On the screen a loop-recording is projected of a man, the artist himelf, walking through the corridor, coming to a halt halfway, showing the palms of his hands and then continuing his walk towards the viewer. In a whispering voice the sentence' i am a channel' can be heard. The visitor is expected to walk through the corridor and through the projection screen.

This work wants to question the 'ego'-notion of the artist by indicating that he doesn't create out of nowhere but is rather to be considered as a channel or filter of different impressions of the world inside and around him. His "originality" lies in the selection and recombinations of these impressions.

The installation was initially created for Beweeging 4, a festival in Antwerp by dance/art organisation De Beweeging that organized an exhibition and performances around 'light' as a working material for the artist.

A scale-model was shown in ostend in april 2001.

A second, adapted version was made in june 2001 for the exhibition 'Embodiment' in Flemish House of Culture De Brakke Grond in Amsterdam.
